From 1985 to 1990 individual sick-listing increased from 30,000 to 750,000 people in a country with only 8 million citizens. Being on long-term sick leave and/or early disability pension became a new and accepted part of life in Sweden. Unable to mount the increasingly high costs of this reform, in 1993 the Swedish government reverted back to the original “no pay for the first day sick” policy, and the level of financial reimbursement from national health insurance for sick days was also reduced from 90% to 70% of full salary.
